Trump confirms he wants to pull thousands of U.S. troops from Germany
06/15/2020 05:34 PM EDT
President Donald Trump on Monday said he wanted to lower the number of U.S. troops in Germany to 25,000 in response to what he characterized as German delinquency on military spending.
The reduction in troop numbers, first reported by The Wall Street Journal, is deeply unpopular among Republican lawmakers and some national security experts.
“We’re at 52,000 soldiers in Germany, that’s a tremendous amount of soldiers, that’s a tremendous cost to the United States,” Trump said. “Germany, as you know, is very delinquent in their payments to NATO.”
Roughly 35,000 U.S. troops are stationed in Germany, where force levels are allowed to go as high as 52,000. Trump noted that Germany was not devoting 2 percent of its gross domestic product to defense and criticized its trade relationship with the U.S. through the European Union.

でかした。確かに52,000という数字を出したようだね。俺はThe Hillという同じく政治系の記事を見つけたが、ここではWSJの報道内容として35,000という数字も同時に出されたことを書いていて整合性が取れてないのが分かる。
Trump confirms plan to cut US troops in Germany to 25,000

President Trump on Monday confirmed plans to cut the number of U.S. troops in Germany by roughly half.
“We’re putting the number down to 25,000 soldiers,” Trump told reporters at the White House.
“Germany’s delinquent,” Trump added. “They’ve been delinquent for years, and they owe NATO billions of dollars, and they have to pay it. So we’re protecting Germany, and they’re delinquent. That doesn’t make sense.”

Trump’s comments mark the first confirmation after reports surfaced earlier this month that he planned to cut the cap on the number of U.S. troops allowed to be in Germany at any one time from 52,000 to 25,000.
The Wall Street Journal first reported that national security adviser Robert O’Brien signed a directive ordering the cap reduction as well as a drawdown of about 9,500 troops from the 35,000 currently there.

Tweets by twitter

The White House went dark, turning off almost all of its external lights, as protesters set fires nearby and thousands again defied curfews to demonstrate against police brutality. Smoke was seen rising near the Washington Monument. https://t.co/pmtsjrQp7lpic.twitter.com/0twHpsWjPk
It's the Ohio Senate, not the White House (count the columns). P.S.: A little bit of fact checking it's not impossible. Stop the fake news. pic.twitter.com/iJivftblZ4
Military trucks with soldiers have moved in place to protect the White House. I worked in the White House, and I’ve never seen anything like this. This does not look like America. This looks like a scene from Tiananmen Square in China in 1989. pic.twitter.com/9EznSriUJo
